Longer, larger diameter gundrills require a great deal of handling...from loading and unloading in the machine...to sharpening...to shipping back to the manufacturer for retipping and reconditioning. Hyper's Threadlock Detachable Head gundrill (patent #3,153,356) is the answer to all of these problems.

The Threadlock Detachable Head can be removed from the machine and replaced in under a minute, resulting in an absolute minimum of machine downtime. The worn head can then be easily resharpened or returned for retipping.

Hyper Tool stocks virtually all standard size heads from .625" to 3" for same day shipment. With care, the shank can last forever. Though the initial cost of a head and a driver exceeds the cost of a standard gundrill, heads alone cost less than a gundrill, with the economic benefit increasing with the length of the drill.

Each of the 7 different threaded drives is designed to accommodate a range of head diameters, per the table below. This means you can drill multiple hole diameters using different heads on the same driver. IMPORTANT: If you do plan to take advantage of this option, be sure to tell us when you order your initial driver and head. We'll explain when you call.

Another useful benefit is that you now have the ability to drill a deeper hole than the machine's capacity (stroke) without turning the part around and drilling from the other side. This can be done by buying an intermediate extension which can be inserted between the head and the driver. The technique is similar to oil well drilling.

If you've ever struggled to insert a 2" drill into a Gizmo, you'll be pleased to discover that the Gizmo can now be easily slipped onto the smaller driver before the detachable head is attached, saving both time and effort!

In case you are wondering...yes, we can convert your existing solid drills to our detachable head style simply by attaching our female threaded driver to the end of your drill (regardless of the manufacturer).

We do not generally recommend the threadlock detachable head to inexperienced operators when drilling cross holes, though many companies are using it successfully. Please call and we will share some tips on successful drilling through cross holes.
